Ballerina Kate

Kate at 2.5Years Old

Kate is 2.5 years old already. Where has the time gone? She has a very high cuteness factor and is a very able family member. She participates in everything that her older siblings do. She has quite some interests. Likes to play on the computer, games like Winnie the Pooh and Freddie Fish. She also enjoys playing with dolls or stuffed animals and just to walk around dressed up in all kinds of stuff. She loves playing outside, and is always willing to get everything on to go outside, which takes at least 10 minutes with all the rituals that need to be followed. Then after 2 minutes of playing outside, she come in to tell that she needs to go to the bath room and we can do the whole thing over again. She loves physical things, climbing, sliding, running, hanging and can easily hike for a few hours without any complaining.

She has started her first 'organized activity' a few months ago. She does gymnastics, which she had been watching all last year while Tara and Jane did it. She was really ready to try it for herself! So she started in September, and she is doing great! She is very serious, trying to do everything she is supposed to do. Her favorite part is the 'jumpoline', but she seems to like everything else in the class too. She has been calling the letter V a straddle, since she has started gymnastics :-) Tara and Jane have gymnastics on a day before her, and she is usually mad that it isn't her gymnastics yet that day. The first few times, she insisted that it was her turn too and when I told her that it was tomorrow and that she had to sleep first, she replied, very indignantly, 'But I did sleep already!!!' :-)

She potty trained herself a few weeks after baby Erik was born. She just totally refused to wear diapers. I had about a week with a lot of pee to clean up, and after that, she was mostly fine. She wasn't even two yet when she potty trained! The earliest potty trainer around here. She still wears a night time diaper, but it is dry quite often. Not ready to go without yet though, since she sleeps in our family bed and having to wash the whole bed is a pain.

Kate is very verbal, she speaks in full sentences, seems to be talking all the time, and has a very good grip on language. Apart from the left and right thingy that is. In the car 'Is this my right hand?' holding up the right hand. Then holding up her left hand 'And is this my wrong hand?' LOL!

She likes playing with her siblings, especially her sisters of baby Erik. It is always fun to play chasing games with her brother, or to play house with her sisters. Tara tells her 'Now go to bed, my dear' and she will reply 'But mom!!!!!' in a very funny way. It cracks me up when I listen to it. Real bedtimes are harder for her, she is not a sleeper (which isn't surprising in our house :-) She gave up naps around 16mo, and now usually goes to sleep around 10pm, gets up around 8am. But I often try to nurse her to sleep, only to have her jump up again and tell me 'I am finished being in bed' and she will be ready for another few hours of play.

Her favorite movie is the 101 Dalmations, which she calls 'The Puppies'. I just got her a puppie bath robe and she is soooo happy about it. It was a thrift store buy too, I think I paid $1.75 or so. What an easy way to delight a kid :-)

Kate used to be less of a picky eater than my other kids, but she has caught on now. Having such a great example in pickiness from her big brothers, she now often declares food to be 'Blech!' adding 'Yucky!!!' for good measure. She still eats carrots and cucumbers though, which is more vegetables than her brothers do. Her thing with food is that she wants to eat all the time. Which is ok if she just grabbed an apple or so for in between meals. But the way it is going now is that she will declare to be finished eating and go off to play. I clear off the table and about half an hour later I get a wailing from the kitchen. ' I was NOT finished eating yet!!!!!!!! Wah!!!!' and she gets totally upset. I hope this stage passes fast! LOL

She is generally healthy, but suffers from pretty bad eczema. We are going to look more into it and going to try to find something that will help her combat it. It really bothers her, she is scratching a lot, and often it even starts bleeding.

A favorite game is playing cat or dog, where she wants a piece of fabric tied on her wrist or her waist, which is her leash and then some one has to walk with her, while she meows or barks. She often changes animals in the middle of the game, and the game can get quite intricate when she is playing it with Tara. I have to admit that I don't understand all the details, but they have lots of fun doing it. I am just used to having her crawl past and barking at me once in a while LOL.
