The Sixth Time

Addicted!

Twenty-three weeks already! This pregnancy is flying by! The baby is kicking almost all the time now and is very reactive when somebody puts a hand on my belly. Lots of fun! For me, I feel great, apart from the heart burn which has started, but that's part of the normal things in pregnancy for me, so just kind of ignoring it :-)

Over the last months, I have gotten more and more involved in car seat safety issues. It started when somebody on one of my mailing lists started posting articles about booster seats being important for kids 4 - 8 yo. That was interesting for me, because I had two kids in that age group. They still were in booster seats, but mostly because they are small for their age. I think otherwise, they would have been in an adult seat belt already. I read more and more about it, and when it came up on another list, it was me doing the posting of the booster seat articles :-)

Then Kate needed a new seat because she was outgrowing her infant seat, and I started researching that. That really got me sucked into the carseat safety issue! After doing a lot of reading and research, I decided to buy a Britax Roundabout for her, in which I can keep her rear facing until she is older. It rear faces till 30 lbs. Most likely she'll outgrow the rear facing position by length before she does by weight.

5 in seats As you see from the picture, our car is getting full with all those kids and car seats, so we have decided that we'll buy a new car after the baby is born. That will most likely be a 15 passenger van, although a 12 passenger one is a possibility too. We want to wait till after the baby's birth, since we won't do much driving with the whole family the first few months, and if we do, we can take both cars out. Most of the driving I do with just the kids, and they will still fit in the car. The only issue is that one of them will have to sit in front. There is no passenger air bag, so that's not a problem, but I am not sure which kid would be best in front. I have been looking into it, and it will most likely be one of the younger ones, which are well protected in their car seats, as opposed to an older one in a booster who can move around more.

More and more car seat issues came up, Tara was outgrowing hers and needed a new one and Jane is still in an Dutch one, which I want to replace with a tethered one. So I did more researching on those car and booster seats. I even got so involved in the car seat issue, that I decided to make a Car Seat Info Page on some of the common errors which are made when using (or not using) car and booster seats. This was fun to do and has gotten me lots of positive feedback, which is always nice :-)

So this all got me addicted to car seat safety and has my husband rolling his eyes when I go off in another rant or lecture about it :-) He is safety conscious, but not as bad as I am. At least he accepts my choices in car seats without any complaining and is always willing to use his superior weight to install one really tight!
